Dealing with a Clogged Sewer Line? Here’s How You Can Avoid Further Damage

By Home Kitchenary | Last Updated: July 1, 2021

Clogged Sewer Line

What comes to your mind when you hear of a clog? Most homeowners will think of their sinks or toilets when they hear about clogging. While that might be the case, clogging the sinks and toilets is a minor issue that you can solve quickly. The main issue comes when you have a clogged sewer line. With a sewer line, you might not fix the problem by yourself, and you will require a reliable plumbing company to attend to the issue.

However, while calling the plumbing company to fix the clogged sewer line, you have to know how to prevent further damages caused by clogging. This article will discuss ways to prevent clogging in your home, which prevents the extra costs incurred when the damage occurs. Let’s jump straight to the list.

Use Enzyme Cleaners on Your Drains Every Month

One preventative measure you can do in your home to prevent sewer clogging is keeping the drains clear every month. However, this doesn’t mean going into the sewer lines to clean them but pouring a cleaner, which helps clean the sewer drain.

There are different types of cleaners available in the market which you can use to clean the drain. However, it is recommended to use an enzyme cleaner that works best compared to the chemical cleaners. Why enzyme cleaners? Enzyme cleaners are environmentally friendly, meaning they are friendly to human beings and plants. Also, they do not corrode the sewer lines, ensuring they last longer.

Performing a Maintenance Rooter Cleaner At least once a Year

Besides using cleaners to clean your drain, it is also essential to have a maintenance rooter cleaner at least once a year. While you cannot do this by yourself, you need to call a fast plumbing service company to clear and repair any damaged parts of your sewer system.

The maintenance rooter cleaning routine is done depending on how old is your plumbing system. Therefore, it is essential to have a rooter cleaning regularly if you have an old house with an old plumbing system. Most plumbing experts recommend doing it at least once a year.

Replace the Old Clay Pipes

Before then, most plumbing companies used lead or clay pipes on sewerage lines since they were the most convenient and readily available by then. However, things have changed, and most companies will use copper or plastic (PVC) on sewer lines since they are easy to install and durable.

Therefore, if you live in an older house, you probably still have the clay or steel sewer lines that have probably worn out. If so, you need to call a plumbing company to replace the pipes with modern ones. Doing so will help you do away with the clogging issue caused by the corroded pipes. You will need to call the plumbing company to access and change your sewer line with the new materials.

Keep Plants and Trees Away From the Sewer Line

One common cause of sewer line blockages is trees and plants above or near the sewer line. While it’s not bad having trees near homes, having them near sewer lines disrupts the sewer line as their roots penetrate deeper into the pipes, causing the blockage. Besides this, the presence of trees above the sewer line creates inconveniences when maintaining the sewer line.

Therefore, if you should have trees on your sewer line, you can only plant smaller plants or grasses whose roots do not penetrate deeper into the sewer pipes. These smaller plants also do not cause inconveniences when it’s time to maintain and repair the sewer lines. So, if you have existing large trees near your sewer line, it would be appropriate to uproot them to avoid constant clogging of the line.

Avoid Flushing Wipes and Other Products Down the Toilet

An item getting past the toilet bowl doesn’t necessarily mean that you will flush it down the sewer drain.  When such an item finds others stuck in the sewer pipes, it will also follow the trend, finally clogging your sewer line. Therefore, to avoid clogging the line, try not to flush down wipes, diapers, tampons, and other insoluble items.

The only thing you need to flush is the toilet paper since it gets soluble in water. Flushing other things can lead to a massive blockage problem, which might cost you heavily to repair. Besides this, you have to monitor the children in the house not to flush down toys and other items in the toilet bowl.

Having a clogged sewer is one of the inconveniences you will not want to experience in your home. Therefore, to ensure that this situation doesn’t happen, it is essential to follow the above tips and work with plumbing experts to ensure your home’s sewer line flows smoothly.
